Torrevieja Salt Lakes
The city of Torrevieja lies in a privileged position between the Mediterranean sea and 2 vast salt lakes, making it a place of outstanding beauty with Natural Parks and many green areas. The salt lakes are distinct in their colour, one being blue and the other pink, and are home to an interesting array of flora & fauna. With the high concentration of salt in the water it is possible to effortlessly float and even read a book, similar to the Dead Sea in the Middle East. There are walking trails throughout the area and Torrevieja’s ”Greenway” runs alongside the lakes. Greenways can be found throughout Spain and are a clever idea planned with the cooperation of the government and local councils. The country’s disused railway tracks which were previously left to gather weeds, are now being turned into hiking and cycling trails that are well maintained and provide the public with better access to the countryside. Slightly inland is the picturesque Torremendo Lake that is popular for fishing and family picnics and BBQ’s. The water is clean and relatively calm, making it ideal for a cooling swim during the hot summer months. Torrevieja itself has dozens of pretty parks and plazas, most within easy walking distance from the city centre. In the height of summer temperatures in the city can reach as high as 40 degrees celsius, and what better way to escape the day’s heat than a cooling stroll or picnic amongst one of the park’s shady trees.
Park of Nations
Located near the Church of the Immaculate Conception in the centre of the city is the lovely Constitution Square. With an attractive fountain as its centerpiece the square is decorated with a variety of trees and palms interspersed with seating areas. The huge Park of Nations covers an area of 20,000 m2 and in its centre is a lake of 6000 m2 that is home to thousands of Koi carp, ducks and geese. The centre of the lake’s walkways is a large scale replica of the European Continent. There are many plants and trees, a children’s playground and interesting exhibition rooms. Located near Torrevieja harbour on Av Dr. Gregorio Marañon, the Parque de Doña Sinforosa has a bandstand as its focal point where visitors are occasionally treated to live music performances. There is also a fountain and a variety of tropical plants and trees. The parks walkways and seating areas are lit at night by ornate lamps, making for a romantic evening stroll. Located on the outskirts of the city, in the area of Torreblanca is the unique and fragrant Aromatic Park. The park’s architecture has a modern feel and there are well kept walkways that are bordered and interspersed by a lovely variety of herbs and spices including sage, rosemary, basil, thyme, lavender and orange blossom. A stroll through Aromatic Park truly awakes the senses.
