When it comes to shopping, we all like a bargain, and what better way to find them than heading to the local market. Torrevieja offers visitors a choice of 3 popular markets within the city centre and a further 3 within a 10 minute drive. The countryside around Torrevieja produces some excellent fruit & vegetables and these are delivered fresh to the stalls on market days.
Torrevieja Friday Market
The Torrevieja Friday Market has now moved up next to Aquopolis, this article will be updated in due course.
Held each Friday from 8am-1pm and located just off Avda de las Cortes Valencianas on Calle Salinero, Torrevieja’s Friday market is one of the largest in Europe and boasts over 1,200 stalls. There is a fantastic range of items on offer and if you enjoy a bit of haggling, some great bargains to be had. Items on sale include fruit & vegetables, cured hams & sausage, cheeses, handbags, shoes, belts, clothing, bedding, hardware, household items, jewellery, accessories, toys and a lot more. Whilst shopping you can grab a bite to eat and a drink from one of the makeshift bars, or food vans that do delicious rotisserie chickens, ham hocks, racks of ribs and tasty little roast potatoes. Alternately you can visit one of the nearby tapas bars or spoil yourself with what you’ve saved at the market by having a menu del dia (menu of the day) in one of the many restaurants in the area. The entrance to the market is also where the city’s main bus terminal is if you wish to visit the popular Playa Flamenca Market in nearby Orihuela Costa.
Torrevieja Fish Market
Torrevieja began its humble existence as a sleepy fishing village and to this day fish remains an integral part of most locals diet. The indoor market known locally as ”La Plasa” is open every day and offers an abundance of fresh fish, shellfish, meat, fruit, vegetables and flowers. There is also a section of the market where free cooking demonstrations are held, and if you are lucky, the kind ladies may even offer you a taste. For the best deals visit early before the restaurants have snapped up all the best produce. The fish market is located at Isabel II Square on the cross road of Canonigo Torres and Jose Martinez Ruiz Azorin.
Torrevieja Craft Market
The Craft Market is the smallest in Torrevieja and certainly the most laid back. Often referred to as the Hippy Market, it is located on the pretty promenade near the harbour and there are around 100 stalls. These sell local arts & crafts, leather goods, clothing, jewellery, mobile phone accessories, hats, scarves, sarongs and a selection of cold drinks and smoothies. The market is open nightly from 8pm-midnight and its location makes it a nice stop off during an evening stroll along the pier. In the summer months, just behind the market there is an old fashioned fun fair with timeless classics like dodgem cars, carousels and a variety of games of chance.
